This weekend’s Tokyo Sevens will be Portugal’s first tournament following their qualification to become one of the 15 core teams on the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series.By beating Japan 26-22 in the qualifying play-off, Frederico Sousa’s side became the third and final side in Hong Kong to join the Game’s elite, joining Canada and Spain who finished first and second after reaching the qualifying final. But Portugal are the only one of the three teams that qualified to be participating in Tokyo this weekend, and they have an opportunity to show the current 12 core teams what they are capable of, playing with less pressure and looking at the Series through new eyes.

Sean Duke scored a hat-trick to help Canada win the Shield in the core team qualifier final, recording a 22-5 victory against Spain at the 2012 Cathay Pacific / HSBC Sevens World Series. Both teams had earlier claimed one of the three core team places on the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series, and were joined by Portugal who beat Japan 33-19 in the qualifying play-off match after these two teams had lost their respective semi finals.Tries from Conor Trainor and Taylor Paris, and Nathan Hirayama’s crucial conversions, were enough to clinch a 14-12 win for Canada against Portugal, whilst Spain beat Japan in sudden death extra time, captain Pablo Feijoo scoring the winning try.

2012 NRL Season Match Wests Tigers v Canberra Raiders is an exciting rugby event. The suspension of Robbie Farah on a dangerous throw charge is a blow to the Tigers hopes of extending a long undefeated record against Canberra but the Raiders cause is seriously hampered by injuries to fullback Josh Dugan and industrious lock forward Shaun Fensom.Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens has persisted with inexperienced front-rowers Aaron Woods and Matthew Groat and chose to switch backrower Liam Fulton to hooker, rather than promote another rookie to pack down in the middle of the scrum. Hallow ! rugby fans……you all are welcome to watch and enjoy the big game from Campbelltown Stadium on Monday at 7.00pm (AEST). Don’t miss the popular event. Just follow the given Online TV Link.

Prediction: Wests Tigers by 2

Greg Prichard writes: Both teams are significantly weakened, the notable absentees including Robbie Farah (Tigers) and Josh Dugan (Raiders), but the Tigers get Gareth Ellis back from injury and that could be the key to this result. The Tigers have been beaten by the Sea Eagles and Dragons since scraping in with a win over the Sharks. The Raiders also have a 1-2 record.

AAP writes: We’re only at round four but already this looms as a must-win game for the Tigers, who have quickly faded from premiership favouritism after three lacklustre performances – and just one victory. Their goal-line and ruck defence were particularly disappointing against St George Illawarra last weekend, an area they’ll need to sort out before facing Canberra. The Raiders have concerns of their own, with fullback Josh Dugan (shoulder) and tackling machine Shaun Fensom (bicep) both ruled out for up to six weeks. The Raiders will miss Dugan’s attack and kick returns dearly, but Fensom’s defensive workload could be equally difficult to replace. Gareth Ellis returns for the Tigers, but they’ll be without captain Robbie Farah (suspension). Back-rower Liam Fulton will deputise at hooker.

Key: Benji Marshall has carried the Tigers attack all season, racking up an NRL-leading four try assists. His halves partner, Tim Moltzen, has been less impressive. The Tigers will be a major threat when these two start to click.

Yet to compete on the World Series this season, but have performed well in the HSBC Asian Sevens Series, winning recently in Bangkok. Samoa – Current Series rank: 5th
The 2009/10 Series champions Samoa did not start particularly well on this Series, including a first ever appearance in the Shield competition in Dubai, where they collected just three points. But the Islanders have been quietly improving ever since, culminating in a Cup victory against New Zealand in Las Vegas, which gives them momentum heading into the last four rounds of the Series.

England – Current Series rank: 4th
England sit 18 points behind current leaders New Zealand having lost to Gordon Tietjens’ side in the Cup competition in both of the previous two rounds. Dan Norton and Mat Turner continue to impress, but Ben Ryan will be hoping his side can add to their Dubai Sevens Cup title and close the gap on the three teams above them.

England have joined pool opponents Japan in announcing their squad to compete in the second IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup in Hong Kong from March 23-24. Eight players who helped England reach the final of the inaugural Sevens Challenge Cup in Dubai in December are recalled, while the likes of 2009 World Cup Sevens players, Heather Fisher and Alice Richardson, return from injury. Michaela Staniford will captain the side, joined by Rachael Burford, Isabelle Noel Smith and Georgina Roberts, who have all been crucial in England’s RBS 6 Nations campaign this season.

New Zealand – Current Series rank: 1st

New Zealand currently lead the 2011/12 Series, in no small part to four Cup final appearances in five rounds, two of which they won – in South Africa and on home soil in New Zealand. The reigning Series and Hong Kong champions will be there or thereabouts this year, but it will be interesting to see how they perform without the season’s leading try scorer Frank Halai.

New Zealand Sevens captain DJ Forbes is set to answer fans questions posted on the official Sevens Facebook page on 21 March during the captain’s photo shoot in Hong Kong. DJ Forbes has lifted two Cup titles this season in Port Elizabeth and Wellington as New Zealand sit top of the overall standings. The reigning Series champions are also hoping to defend their Hong Kong Sevens title this weekend and they face pool matches with South Africa, Wales and USA.

Prop Martin Castrogiovanni has recovered from broken ribs and will line up in the Italy side to face Scotland at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico on Saturday. The Leicester front-rower had been expected to miss the remainder of the Six Nations championship after injuring himself in the narrow defeat to England last month. However, the 30-year-old has made a swifter than expected recovery and will take his place in the Italian front row alongside Leonardo Ghiraldini and Andrea Lo Cicero at the weekend.

Castrogiovanni is one of six changes from the side comfortably beaten 24-3 by Wales last weekend at the Millennium Stadium. Amongst those recalled by coach Jacques Brunel is scrum-half Edorado Gori who is available again having overcome a knee complaint.

Gori will partner Kristopher Burton in the half-backs, the fly-half retaining his place despite coming in for criticism for his performance in Cardiff. Elsewhere in the back division, Giovambattista Venditti replaces Luke McLean on the right wing, while Tommaso Benvenuti will start at centre. Up front, Simone Favaro drops to the bench with flanker Robert Barbieri taking his place, while Aironi lock Marco Bortolami comes in for Cornelius Van Zyl to earn his 93rd cap. Australian-born lock Joshua Furno could make his Six Nations debut this weekend having been included in the squad – the 22-year-old made his Azzurri bow back in August.

Both teams head into the encounter winless and looking to avoid the ‘woden spoon’. Italy have won six of their 18 encounters against Scotland, who have not emerged victorious in Rome since 2006.

Scotland boss Andy Robinson has made just one personnel change to his side that will do battle with Italy on Saturday. Winger Lee Jones suffered a concussion last time out against Ireland and was ruled out of this weekend’s match as a result. Max Evans – who started in the midfield against the Irish – moves onto the wing to replace Jones with Nick de Luca taking up the number thirteen jersey that he has vacated.

De Luca was forced to pull out of the game against the Irish at the last moment due to a hamstring injury but has made a full recovery. In the only other change to the matchday 22, Bath’s Jack Cuthbert is named among the replacements.

Welcome to the final week of our Six of the Best series, the chance to remind you of some of the most memorable matches associated with a particular Six Nations fixture. This time it comes with a slight twist: not just the best Wales v France games down the years (otherwise some famous Welsh victories in Paris – 1999 (34-33), 2001 (43-35) and 2005 (24-18) – might also have been included), but six Grand Slam deciders between the countries, given the context of Saturday’s momentous encounter in Cardiff.

Wales match against France on Saturday 17th March 2012 is a tough fight.Wales have completed four of their last five Grand Slams against France. Wales team members are really confident that they are going to win the final game (against France). Gethin Jenkins will claim the third Six Nations Grand Slam of his distinguished career if Wales can defeat France in Cardiff on Saturday.

All the Wales team members are mentally and physically ready to face the France challenge.”We’ve been favourites in the last two games we have played this season, and it is not often you can say about a Wales team, not when I have been involved, nyway.”In the past, we haven’t been favourites, we’ve come under the radar to win those Grand Slams, although I don’t think I would ever say we were favourites against France.”The Wales squad enjoyed a day off on Wednesday before reassembling on Thursday, when coach Warren Gatland will name his starting line-up to face France.Gatland’s only anticipated change from the side that beat Italy last Saturday is skipper Sam Warburton’s return at openside flanker, provided he shakes off a knee roblem.

Saturday’s game was being billed as a potential Grand Slam showdown only a few weeks ago, but France slipped off the pace after drawing at home with Ireland and then losing to England in Paris. But Jenkins said of Les Bleus: “They consistently turn up and beat some of the best sides in the world.”They can play great rugby at times, and the loss they had (against England) is only going to spur them on to come over and play well against us.

“We know exactly how tough a challenge it is going to be, and how good they are. They’ve got players who can break you at any time in the game.”We’ve had a good bit of momentum from the World Cup, and now it comes down to one big game, and we need eally to drive it home and get a win.”It will be a red-letter day for one member of the Wales front-row even before kick-off, with hooker Matthew Rees poised to win his 50th cap.

French have wrapped up two of their nine clean sweeps – in 1968 and 1998 – against Wales. Now they are waiting for the victory over wales on Sat 17 March. At this moment France wing Vincent Clerc will not travel to Wales for his team’s final RBS Six Nations clash after sustaining a shoulder injury against England. His absence is one of six changes to the squad that met up before the England match, with Alexis Palisson taking Clerc’s place in the party. With any hope of victory in the tournament dashed by the 24-22 loss, coach Phillippe Saint-Andre has rung the changes for the final match.

Lock Julien Pierre, flanker Fulgence Ouedraogo, scrum-half Dimitri Yachvili, centre Florian Fritz and uncapped full-back Jean-Marcellin Butin are the other new faces for the World Cup semi-finalists.Veteran former skipper Lionel Nallet looks like he has played his last Test match while scrum-half Julien Dupuy, centre Maxime Mermoz and winger Julien Malzieu have also been axed.

There are injury doubts over Thierry Dusautoir (knee), Imanol Harinordoquy (knee) and Julien Bonnaire (elbow).”It’s sort of a page that’s turning,” said Saint-Andre. “We would have liked for the veterans to have an exceptional jubilee Saturday in Cardiff. This isn’t the case.”I wanted to really thank Lionel Nallet regarding his spirit, his professionalism.

“I was lucky to coach him at Bourgoin and again in the France team. He knew that we had a sort of a deal together – if we played a final at Cardiff, he would have continued the adventure. Unfortunately the adventure finishes here.”The younger players learned a lot from him from his commitment to the group and his professionalism as a first team player and substitute.”

The match betting is likely to be close when England host Ireland at Twickenham in the final match of the 2012 Six Nations on Saturday 17th March 2012. The match brings the curtain down on this year’s championships and Ireland will be looking to inflict a fourth successive defeat on England in the Six Nations. England have lost each of the last three meetings with the Irish, including a stunning 24-8 defeat at the Aviva Stadium last season, where Ireland managed to deny England a Grand Slam victory with a dominant display on home soil.

Reigning Six Nations Champions, England, welcome Ireland to Twickenham in this Six Nations Clash. England have made changes to their team after a very disappointing World Cup. Their coaching staff are also in transition. Despite the changes, England made a winning start to their 2012 Six Nations Campaign with wins over Scotland and Italy but fell victim to a late fightback from Wales on March 25th. Their opponents Ireland will be looking for back to back wins against England after beating them 24-8 in Dublin last year. The game also takes place on St. Patrick’s Day, so they will be even more motivated to make Irish celebrations taste even sweeter on this day. The match takes kicks off at 5.00pm on Saturday 17th March 2012.

Sean O’Brien has been recalled to the Ireland team for Saturday’s Six Nations game against England at Twickenham. Flanker O’Brien replaces Peter O’Mahony after what Irish coach Declan Kidney described as “a very tough call”.O’Mahony performed well in the win over Scotland after O’Brien was ruled out of the game with a foot infection.Kidney’s side is otherwise unchanged, with Eoin Reddan and Donnacha Ryan again playing in the absence of injured duo Conor Murray and Paul O’Connell.Rory Best has overcome a slight rib problem and captains the side in the absence of O’Connell.Ryan took a blow to the shoulder against the Scots but has also been named in the starting XV despite taking a limited part in training this week.Best will become Ireland’s most capped hooker when he makes his 59th Test appearance, eclipsing Keith Wood’s milestone of 58.
Ireland have won seven of their last eight Six Nations matches against England, including three of the last four meetings at Twickenham. The contest is likely to decide who finishes runners-up with Ireland ending the competition strongly by thrashing Italy, drawing with France and blitzing Scotland.”I thought Peter (O’Mahony) played really well and it was an absolutely tight selection call, but Sean has trained well and just got the nod,” said Kidney.”England are improving with every match and have won three games on the road, so they will be looking forward to playing at home again.”They had a fine win in Paris, so that will have given them a lot of confidence,” added the Ireland coach.

Revenge is in the air…it somehow always is when England play France, but Sunday’s Six Nations battle in Paris has taken on a whole new dimension. In many ways the clash at the Stade de France will represent a crossroads for both teams. In light of the news coming out of Canberra this week, one certainly gets the feeling this weekend could make or break Stuart Lancaster’s international coaching career.

It all sounds very dramatic but le Crunch will ultimately be the acid test of whether the ‘new’ England have managed to progress under the interim coach since the ‘old’ side bowed out of the World Cup to a very similar French side. Some of the England players who managed to escape the axe – Ben Foden notably – have already spoken of Sunday being a chance to take revenge for that defeat, which prompted wholesale change in the English setup.

It’s worth taking a moment to cast our minds back to that fateful day at Eden Park when les Bleus blitzed Martin Johnson’s men early on to take a 16-0 lead by the half-hour mark. The result was essentially settled before the teams swapped ends. Judging by France’s first three games in the Championship, we’re unlikely to see a repeat as they have struggled to get out of the starting blocks. The first twenty minutes against Italy, Scotland and Ireland saw the men in blue do little more than tackle before stepping it up gear and dominating in the second half.

The French staff have admitted to having tried numerous solutions – even arriving at the stadium earlier than usual – without success. If team selection is anything to go by, we’re in for another slow start as the hosts have picked a kicking fly-half to counter England’s tactic of trying to occupy territory in the early stages of their games on the road.

The visitors should have no excuse for not starting with gusto as they look to expel the frustration from that oh-so-close loss to Wales a fortnight ago and at the same time capitalise on France’s short turn-around after their Irish battle (which was cut from six to four days after Philippe Saint-André sent his players home to ‘recharge’ with their families).

Indeed, the visitors will have a point to prove after coming with a hairsbreadth of taking the lead in the Championship standings at Twickenham. What would the naysayers be telling us if Courtney Lawes had held onto that ball thus preventing Scott Williams from racing away for a late winner? Would that result have been enough to convince the RFU that Lancaster is good enough for the permanent job?

An improvement it was, but some stats just cannot be ignored and they paint a sorry picture for Lancaster’s team: just two tries (both from charge downs) and just three line-breaks in as many games. They’ve kicked more possession than any other side and have poorest tackling numbers in the tournament – not exactly a shining example of the team ticking all the boxes.
So, clearly, England aren’t the most exciting team on the block. But does that mean they can’t beat France? Not by a long shot. Scotland are a classic example of how impressive statistics do not necessarily equate to positive results and if England play to the strengths of the personnel at their disposal and continue to build on the positives of their performance against Wales, then they have every reason to believe they can win in the French capital.

If they try to play loose and fast, slinging it about and risk giving the French loose ball with which to counter, they will lose. Manu Tuilagi and David Strettle both came desperately close to scoring at Twickers, proof that all is not wrong. If England have the confidence to back their structures, and bring the attacking threats of Chris Ashton and Ben Foden into the picture a bit more, tries can be scored.

Most importantly, they must match the French pack at the breakdown, which they failed to do in Auckland. If Lee Dickson is provided with quality ball, then they can count on Manu Tuilagi to punch a few holes and Owen Farrell to land his penalties.

For the French, their Six Nations title hopes are on the line as they must win to force a decider against Wales a week later. After last week’s draw with Ireland, defeat will mean the start to the Saint-André era will be considered a failure. Motivation is never an issue when two of the fiercest rivals in world rugby face off, but with so much at stake this time, tension will run higher than ever. It promises to be an enthralling battle.

Players to watch:

For France: In his first three games in charge Saint-André resisted the temptation to fiddle with his backline, insisting on the need for continuity, which makes the selection of Lionel Beauxis at fly-half all the more significant. PSA is adamant that it has more to do with tactics than the form of François Trinh-Duc, who has be grilled in the French press over the last month. Beauxis has not exactly been brilliant off the bench either but is the perfect man for the role handed to him on Sunday. There are few players who can kick the ball further – or more accurately – than the Toulouse ten and England would be ill-advised to give him too many chances to use his cannon of a boot. Also keep an eye on Clermont centre Wesley Fofana, who has scored three tries in his first three Tests. You couldn’t ask before a better start to an international career!

For England: The last time England visited the Stade de France, hooker Dylan Hartley and prop Dan Cole, where taken off at half time after the English scrum was massacred. Both players have spoken of using Sunday as a chance for redemption. “I can still picture it. I can still see those scrums,” said Hartley. “There are some demons to exorcise. It is inexcusable for an English pack to be pushed back on our own ball.” Coles added that it was the “toughest rugby experience” he’s ever had. France’s scrum is as strong as ever, so we’ll find out if the English youngsters have upped their game.

Head-to-head: If you love the sight of big guys running into each other, you’re in for a treat when Manu Tuilagi lines up against Aurélien Rougerie. It’s a significant battle since both play significant roles for their respective teams. Tuilagi was England’s most dangerous runner against Wales and should once again spearhead their attack in Paris. Rougerie is the ‘captain’ of the French backline but is coming off two disappointing performances: he missed five out of fourteen tackles at Murrayfield and it was his pass that Tommy Bowe intercepted for Ireland’s first try last Sunday. The 74-Test veteran has seen it all before, but will have to be on top of his game to stop the visitors’ Samoan battering ram.

Rugby Union betting odds

Prediction: In their previous three meetings, an average of just over five points has separated these teams and all signs point to another close one. The home side’s only Six Nations reversal at Stade de France in their last 17 matches was to England in 2008 but France have won just one of their last five Championship encounters with their old foes from across the Channel. It’s a tough one to call but the strength of the French bench could tip it in the hosts’ favour. France by three.

Ireland hooker Rory Best has been named as captain for Saturday’s clash with Scotland at the Aviva Stadium. With Brian O’Driscoll and Paul O’Connell both ruled out the RBS Six Nations encounter, coach Declan Kidney has handed the reins to the Ulsterman.Best, who has led Ireland twice before against Canada and USA in 2009, suffered a rib injury against Les Bleus but has been included in the starting line-up. “It’s a great honour to be asked to captain the side. It’s something you dream of doing,” Best said.”It’s very unfortunate that Paul’s out but I’m honoured to do the job.”We know we’ll have to be on the money against Scotland. It will be a massive challenge for our defence.”

Kidney has made two changes to the line-up that drew 17-17 with France last time out with Donnacha Ryan replacing O’Connell. Eoin Reddan starts at scrum-half after Conor Murray was also ruled out for the last two matches against Scotland and England because of a knee injury.Mike McCarthy and Tomas O’Leary have been drafted on to the bench to plug the gaps left by Ryan and Reddan.

Keith Earls (groin), Donncha O’Callaghan (ankle) and Sean O’Brien (foot) picked up knocks against France and will be assessed throughout the week.Best, who will play his 58th Test on Saturday to equal Keith Wood’s record as Ireland’s most capped hooker, eased any concern over his fitness.”It was more precautionary having the scan and it’s comforting to know there’s nothing sinister there. I trained fully today,” said Best.

Ireland Team: 15 R Kearney, 14 T Bowe, 13 K Earls, 12 G D’Arcy, 11 A Trimble, 10 J Sexton, 9 E Reddan, 1 C Healy, 2 R Best (capt), 3 M Ross, 4 D O’Callaghan, 5 D Ryan, 6 S Ferris, 7 S O’Brien, 8 J Heaslip.

Replacements: 16 S Cronin, 17 T Court, 18 M McCarthy, 19 P O’Mahony, 20 T O’Leary, 21 R O’Gara, 22 F McFadden.

Scotland captain Ross Ford believes victory over Ireland in Saturday’s Six Nations clash in Dublin is vital for the squad to retain belief that they are moving in the right direction. The Scots have earned praise from numerous quarters for their valiant performances in defeat against England, Wales and France, but remain winless in this year’s tournament. And Flood says it is essential they put an end to the drought that has seen his side suffer five straight Test defeats for the first time since 2004.

“It’s very important for us as a squad to see that the way we’re trying to play bears fruit,” said the Edinburgh hooker.”We believe that is the case… that we are playing in the right way to win games. It’s just about sustaining it for 80 minutes. There’s a lot of frustration in the squad with the way that the results have gone.”We could’ve been sitting here two from three if we had sustained our performances for a full 80 minutes.” Head coach Andy Robinson, who has a record of two wins from 13 Six Nations games in charge, has side-stepped direct questions over his future.Ford is adamant the players are as disappointed by their results as their fiercest critics and hopes Robinson, who is contracted until after the 2015 World Cup, will remain beyond the tournament.”You have to make sure you’re upbeat and focus on the next game and you go into every training session with enthusiasm and looking to improve.

“But we’re not complacent. We know they’re a very good team and we’ve got to perform at our best to get that result.”While the lineout is a crucial area for Scotland, Ford expects the breakdown to be where the game will be won and lost. And centre Graeme Morrison, who is a key midfield ball carrier for Scotland, revealed the squad have been practising how to combat the technique this week. He said: “We have been working a wee bit on it in training this week, the way the ball carriers carry the ball into the contact and the supporting players around, how they deal with the Irish players that are doing it.”While Saturday’s match could be key in determining Robinson’s future, Morrison insisted it has not been weighing on the players’ minds. He said: “It’s not something that’s been discussed at all. We’re in the middle of a Six Nations tournament and have to focus on the rugby side of things.”

Asked if Scotland need to win to justify Robinson’s faith, Morrison said: “Absolutely. He’s put so much into turning us into the team that we are, a team that I believe can beat most rugby sides in the world.”It’s just putting it together to show we can do it.”

Scotland Team: 15-Stuart Hogg, 14-Lee Jones, 13-Nick De Luca, 12-Graeme Morrison, 11-Sean Lamont, 10-Greig Laidlaw, 9-Mike Blair, 8-David Denton, 7-Ross Rennie, 6-John Barclay, 5-Jim Hamilton, 4-Richie Gray, 3-Geoff Cross, 2-Ross Ford (captain), 1-Allan Jacobsen

Wales captain Sam Warburton has been ruled out of Saturday’s RBS Six Nations game against Italy in Cardiff. The open-side’s knee injury means Justin Tipuric starts at seven, although centre Jamie Roberts does start despite his own knee problems. Prop Gethin Jenkins captains Wales even though former skipper Matthew Rees returns to the side, replacing Ken Owens at hooker.Lock Luke Charteris is named on the bench after returning from injury. The 28-year-old had been sidelined with a long-term wrist injury since the end of the 2011 World Cup.

But Charteris returned to action for Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday in their Pro12 24-14 defeat at home to Munster. Centre Scott Williams, who scored the winning try against England last time out as Wales sealed the Triple Crown, is again among the replacements. His Scarlets team-mate Owens also has to be content with a place on the bench thanks to the return of British and Irish Lion Rees after a calf injury, with Richard Hibbard the hooker to miss out completely.Rees, who last played on 14 January for the Scarlets, packs down between Adam Jones and Jenkins to reform the Lions front-row that took on South Africa in 2009.”Due to injuries to all three players at one time or another we have not been able to field this 2009 Lions front row too often,” said Wales head coach Warren Gatland.

“So, although we are more than happy with the job Ken has done for us, we are giving Matthew the opportunity to make his contribution as the competition reaches its climax.”We are back at the Millennium Stadium in front of our home fans and we need to refocus sharply, after our Triple Crown triumph at Twickenham, if we are to give ourselves the best chance of being in contention for the Championship going into that final weekend against France.

TEAMS

WALES: Leigh Halfpenny (Blues); Alex Cuthbert (Blues), Jonathan Davies (Scarlets), Jamie Roberts (Blues), George North (Scarlets); Rhys Priestland (Scarlets), Michael Phillips (Bayonne); Gethin Jenkins (Blues, capt), Matthew Rees (Scarlets), Adam Jones (Ospreys), Alun Wyn Jones (Ospreys), Ian Evans (Ospreys), Dan Lydiate (Dragons), Justin Tipuric (Ospreys), Toby Faletau (Dragons).

REPLACEMENTS: Ken Owens (Scarlets), Paul James (Ospreys), Luke Charteris (Dragons), Ryan Jones (Ospreys), Lloyd Williams (Scarlets), James Hook (Perpignan), Scott Williams (Scarlets).

Italy have responded to their heavy defeat in Ireland by making seven changes to the side for Saturday’s Six Nations visit to Cardiff to face Wales.Australia-born fly-half Kris Burton replaces Tobias Botes, who missed three attempts at goal in Dublin. Scrum-half Fabio Semenzato, wing Mirco Bergamasco and centre Gonzalo Canale return behind the scrum. And Lock Cornelius van Zyl, prop Andrea Lo Cicero and flanker Simone Favaro are added to the forward pack.Fly-half Botes pays the price for an erratic kicking display against Ireland that saw him miss three out of five attempts at goal.

The kicking duties are set to be returned to Racing Metro wing Bergamasco, who has not played for Italy since the 2011 World Cup beacuse of a shoulder injury.Bergamasco, who kicked the winning penalty in a 22-21 victory over France in last year’s championship, will be making his 86th appearance for his country. Before losing to Ireland after fading in the second half, Italy had also fallen to France in Paris and at home to England in this season’s competition.

“Italy will be hoping to find us complacent and with one eye on the French game, but nothing less than victory on Saturday will be accepted by this Wales team or satisfy the nation behind us.”All of that leaves the players themselves brimming with ruthless intent.”Utility back James Hook has recovered from his bout of chicken pox, playing in Perpignan’s 22-17 defeat by Agen at the weekend, and is also held in reserve, meaning fly-half Stephen Jones drops out of the match 22 completely.

Victory at the Millennium Stadium against the Azzurri will keep Gatland’s side on course for a third Grand Slam in eight years, with France the final hurdle to face in Cardiff on 17 March. Wales are unbeaten against Italy at the Millennium Stadium and only Gatland’s men can now win a Grand Slam this year after Ireland ended France’s 100% Six Nations record by holding them to a 17-17 draw in Paris.Italy have beaten Wales in Rome, in 2003 and 2007 , and also held the Welsh in Cardiff in 2006.

Teams

Italy: Andrea Masi (Aironi); Luke McLean (Treviso), Gonzalo Canale (Clermont Auvergne), Alberto Sgarbi (Treviso), Mirco Bergamasco (Racing Metro); Kris Burton (Treviso), Fabio Semenzato (Treviso); Andrea Lo Cicero (Racing Metro), Leonardo Ghiraldini (Treviso), Lorenzo Cittadini (Treviso), Quintin Geldenhuys (Aironi), Cornelius van Zyl (Treviso), Alessandro Zanni (Treviso), Simone Favaro (Aironi), Sergio Parisse (Stade Francais, capt).
